1 The Peninsular Plateau

The Peninsular Plateau

  • The oldest cratonic block
  • Part of Gondwana
  • Have features dating back to Archean times
  • Plateau remained above sea-level since Pre-cambrian times
  • Since then is eroded and denuded with low lying hills, hard resisting rocks
  • Average elevation - 900m
  • Peninsular Plateau is like Block Mountain and may be referred to as an uplifted horst
  • Old cratonic block of Archaean times
  • Formed by fusing numerous microcontinents
  • 3 Main Proto-Continent collision - Aravali, Dharwad, Singbhum
  • The Fusion is along Narmada--Godavari--Son lineament
  • The remnants of the Proto-Continent - Relicts of fold mountains and shields like Aravali fold mountain with Mewar highlands
    • E Rajasthan highlands
    • Mahabharat plateau
    • Madhya Bharat Pathar
